Summer fun

It's been a busy yet relaxing week around here. Busy in that I've been working outside and inside and trying to catch up on things I let go during the school year. Relaxing in that I'm doing it all at my pace and I have no real deadlines. Ahhhh.

I got the rest of the garden planted Tuesday. Lots of tomatoes, peppers (sweet and hot), zucchini, yellow summer squash, cilantro, sweet basil, green beans (pole and bush varieties) and sunflowers. I skipped the corn this year as it really didn't do well at all last year and the farmer up the road sells delicious sweet corn by the dozens. I'll post a picture of my bean teepees and Florida weave tomato staking system soon.

NOW READING

A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. Set in the Cajun deep south in the 1940s, the book is compelling. Cassie read it for a college lit class last semester and thought I would enjoy it. The main premise is the question of what is important to learn in life? Gaines is a very good writer. His description of life in a small African-American sugar cane plantation settlement transport me to that time and place. In that way, the book is reminiscent of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and Pat Conroy's "The Water is Wide." It's the first book about this era I've read which was written by an African-American, though, and the perspective is refreshingly different. The daily injustices of segregation are subtly but powerfully shown through the interaction of the characters of the novel. I'm halfway through and plan to finish while floating in the pool this afternoon.

DIET NEWS

For the first time in our 23-year marriage, Terry and I are dieting together. We are doing the Fat Flush and are on day four. It's SO MUCH EASIER doing it together. I plan the menu, prepare our meals, pack his lunch for work, and yet it's easier because I don't have to worry about fixing him something different (and tempting) to eat. I even find myself fixing more creative and interesting food than I would if I were cooking just for myself. So far, Terry has been very cooperative and faithful. Smile. I haven't had a buddy to diet with since my Mom and I were on Weight Watchers when I was in high school. I didn't even have to coax Terry to do this. I prayed about it and thought about it for several weeks and announced to him last week that I was starting this on June 1 and he didn't have to join me in it, but I would not be shopping or cooking for him for at least two weeks. (I did it in a very pleasant tone of voice, I know it sounds rather harsh in print. Heh heh.) So far, so good. I feel so much better already and my pants are fitting a bit looser.

What's happening in your summer?

Blessings,

Sandy

Go Terry!
Go Sandy!

How great to be doing this together.
It is so hard to make different meals when you are dieting!

I can't wait to hear your two week results.
I know they will be amazing.

I predict Terry loses 20.

I lost 14 my first two weeks....and him being a man...it will just fall off!!!

Thanks, Donna. We finished Week 1 yesterday and still feel very good. We both got a bit grouchy over the weekend but nothing major. ;) I'm looking forward to Phase 2 starting next week when we can add a few "good carbs". We didn't either one weigh before starting! I haven't weighed in quite awhile because I play such games with the scale. I decided to measure my progress by my clothes and the shorts that were uncomfortably tight last week are now a bit loose around the waist! Same with Terry. I can tell pants that were snug are now looser. At some point we will probably weigh...ha. Strict adherance to the diet without strict results documentation.
