In the still of winter, the annual rite of Spring begins
Thump, thwump, thump
Pitcher throws
Catcher catches
Voices chatter, each day more join the chorus

Ball on bat, hitters swing, tentatively at first
Stiff from the long winter's inactivity
Games begin, nothing serious, a glorified game of street ball
Fans migrate south or west and sit in sunny bleachers
Watching new players, old players, favored sport
Baseball
Time for Opening Day at last
Play Ball!
